Cell Phones Vs. Society: Have you ever seen a car accident caused by texting and driving? Have you ever had a conversation with someone where they pulled out their phone and completely disconnected? If so, you have felt a few of the many negative effects cell phones have on society. Today, technology is constantly evolving, taking new forms, updating, and finding its way into more and more of users lives. Most people are comfortable with this, especially the youth of today, as they have been around technology for their whole lives. However, for those who have lived life outside of this digital age, the explosion of technology is a strange phenomenon. Among all of the tech, lies the cell phone. A device that can now allow one to search†¦show more content†¦The Missouri School of Journalism asked college students to do word search puzzles in two conditions. In the first condition, participants completed the puzzles with their iPhone in front of them, while in the second they w ere not allowed to have their phone. Halfway through the puzzles the experimenter called the participant’s phone and let it ring six times before hanging up. Not being able to answer the phone led to increased heart rate and blood pressure which indicate increased levels of anxiety, the phone call also led to a decline in performance. The results of this experiment establish clearly that users are developing unhealthy relationships with their cell phones. Simply not having access to the phone caused spikes in anxiety indicating cell phone use has a negative impact on mental health. Correspondingly, the study conducted by the University of Southern Maine followed similar methods as the Missouri School of Journalism. Pairs of college students were brought into the laboratory to perform a variety of tasks requiring mental effort, the experimenter left her cell phone or a similar size spiral notebook on a table in plain view of the participants. Results indicated that the â€Å" mere presence† of the cell phone in comparison to the similar size notebook resulted in decreased performance but only on the more difficult tasks.
